CEO, Principal Landscape Architect

Michael Dumanski founded North Hill Gardens in 2008, building it into a practice grounded in creative problem-solving, collaboration, and a passion for environmental sustainability. As Principal Landscape Architect, Michael believes that every challenge has a smart solution and works to bring out the best in his team’s creative thinking. He actively engages clients at every stage of a project to ensure a shared vision and successful outcomes.

Deeply committed to a healthier environment, Michael focuses on reintroducing native plants into British gardens and implementing solutions that reduce carbon footprints. His leadership at North Hill Gardens reflects a “big picture” approach, supporting the team while nurturing the firm’s ethos of collaborative design. Over the years, he has brought together a talented group of individuals who share his vision for creating thoughtful, impactful landscapes.

In addition to his professional work, Michael serves as an active Board Member of the Landscape Institute’s Scotland Branch, where he contributes to advancing the profession.

Beyond landscape architecture, Michael has pursued photography as a second field of study and enjoys a range of active pursuits. He is a regular at the Glasgow Climbing Centre, where he practises rope climbing, and he often surfs at Dunbar. A man of varied talents, Michael once played drums and recorded studio tracks with a local funk-jazz band, and he now spends his free time restoring classic motorbikes. At home, he enjoys building stable models with his daughters, embracing both creativity and family time.

Michael lives by the widely quoted words of Mahatma Gandhi: “Be the change you want to see in the world.”
