Every so often a brief walks in that quietly flips the usual logic. This large plot behind a modest, modern brick extension in Clarkston could easily have been levelled, terraced, and heavily developed into a formal suburban garden. Instead, the family wanted the opposite: nature invited in, not tamed. What emerged is a piece of low-country meadow tucked behind a Glasgow suburb, with self-binding gravel paths threading between islands of meadow cushions, a central sitting area buried in tall grasses and clover, and a natural playground for the children waiting at the far end. The whole composition orbits a mature conifer kept as its pivotal feature, and the finished garden reads more like the grounds of a luxury cabin BnB than a typical back garden.

We successfully designed this project by:

• Preserving the mature central conifer as the pivotal feature of the design, providing shade, structure, and vertical scale around which the rest of the composition is arranged.
   
• Turning the majority of the garden into a naturalistic meadow scheme, with islands of tall grasses, meadow flowers, and clover lawn replacing the traditional turf.
   
• Threading gravel paths through the meadow in wavy, undefined-seeming shapes that guide movement without formalising the layout.
   
• Positioning a central sitting area within the meadow, surrounded on all sides by ornamental grasses and low flowering perennials.
   
• Locating a children's play zone at the rear of the garden, surfaced in uncontaminated pine bark and framed by cushions of clover lawn, with room to add playground features over time.
   
• Introducing a permeable, low-impact material palette throughout, aligned with the client's rewilding brief and keeping surface water on-site.
   
• Composing the planting scheme from ornamental grasses, flowering perennials, structural shrubs, and self-seeding meadow species that will develop character and diversity year on year.
   
• Tying the garden back to the character of the modest, modern brick extension with its large glazing, so the wild landscape can be enjoyed as a framed view as much as a place to spend time in.
   
• Delivering the transformation with minimal hard landscaping, demonstrating how a substantial change of character can be achieved without heavy engineering or a large construction budget.
