The wedge-shaped garden was awkwardly situated between a road and railway tracks. The front garden had a significant levelling problem, necessitating new, accessible stairs or a ramp to the main entrance of the house, while the back garden was divided by a garage building. The client wanted a quick-access sitting area designed into the new steps. Other design aspects include adding new security fencing panels along the railway tracks, an outdoor kitchen with a sink, and a large organic dining patio. Introduction
Our Design Process
- Guided by our client's taste, we created a design inspired by brutalist architecture, where large, poured concrete elements mix with semi-wild greenery.
- The front garden features a composition of large rectangular floating poured in-situ concrete stairs and a ramp with a gentle slope, including a concrete platform that extends into a floating bench made of hardwood.
- Dark stone brick platforms are incorporated between the concrete steps in the front garden, adding a distinctive texture, while large solid hardwood cubes serve as additional seating.
- The self-binding gravel paths in the front garden, along with the wild-looking covering plants, soften the sharp look of the brutalist stairway, creating an organic layout.
- The garage has been demolished in the back garden, with the gap filled with soil and the boundary wall filled up with matching masonry stone.
- The outdoor kitchen in the back garden features a poured in-situ concrete structure with a large worktop, shelves, and a marine-grade stainless steel sink, reflecting the brutalist theme.
- The main patio in the back garden is built with poured concrete slabs, creating an organic, reclaimed-like pattern with irregular sizes and gaps to allow the clover to grow.
- An additional sitting area farther in the back garden, surrounded by a natural stone brick wall, was added.
- The self-binding gravel path in the back garden organically meanders through the space.
- A new custom-made metal grid fencing has been installed along the railway tracks.
